GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre is returning to Titletown. The quarterback, estranged from the franchise he helped resurrect during his 16-year career, will be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and have his number retired next July 18. Favres No. 4 will be unveiled on the Lambeau Field north end zone facade at halftime of a yet-to-be-determined game during the 2015 season. "Im truly honoured," Favre said Monday via conference call from his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. "It is time to come back." Favre, who holds virtually every meaningful NFL career quarterback record, famously retired at a tearful press conference in March 2008, only to change his mind and decide later that year that he still wanted to play, setting up an awkward showdown between him and the team hed come to embody while winning three NFL MVP awards and leading the Packers to a Super Bowl title. He was traded to the New York Jets for what would end up being a third-round draft pick, an acrimonious parting of the ways that divided the Packers loyal fan base. After one year with the Jets, Favre retired a second time, only to join the rival Minnesota Vikings, for whom he played two seasons. Favre led the Vikings to two victories over the Packers during the 2009 season, when Minnesota advanced to the NFC championship game but lost to the eventual Super Bowl-champion New Orleans Saints. In 2010, the Packers beat Favre and the Vikings twice on their way to the Super Bowl title, led by Favres successor, Aaron Rodgers. Favre retired for good following the 2010 season, while Rodgers went on to win the NFL MVP award in 2011. Former Packers president/CEO Bob Harlan served as the intermediary and brought the two sides back together. General manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy, who made the decision to part ways with Favre in 2008, attended Mondays news conference but did not speak with reporters. "Its great to have old friends home again," Harlan said. Harlan said the team, the Packers Hall of Fame and the Favre family had agreed in principle to the idea last November. "In all honesty, I was probably more ready sooner than everyone else was," Favre said. "I knew this moment would come ... and Im just glad were here, its in stone, and it will be done." Favre said he hoped to return to Lambeau Field this season, perhaps for a ceremonial coin flip with former Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr. "I just think that would be an electric moment," said Favre, who also said hed love to pose for what would surely be an iconic photo: Starr, Favre and Rodgers. Favre also said he would like former general manager Ron Wolf, who gave up a first-round pick to acquire Favre from the Atlanta Falcons in February 1992, and former coach Mike Holmgren, who helped harness his immense talent, to also be part of the celebration of his return. "Without Ron (Wolf), I would not be on this phone right now and we would not be having this discussion," Favre said. Favre disputed that he was concerned about a negative fan reaction upon his return to Lambeau Field, having been booed mercilessly during his returns with the Vikings. "Will 100 per cent of the people be for you? Thats never the case," Favre said. "But I know Packers fans as well as anyone, and theres no one like them." The Packers have retired just five numbers in their 94-year history: Tony Canadeos No. 3, Don Hutsons No. 14, Starrs No. 15, Ray Nitschkes No. 66 and Reggie Whites No. 92. Favre is eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2016 class. Once he is enshrined there, his name will be placed in the teams ring of honour at Lambeau Field. "My goodness, 16 years in Green Bay - wonderful years," Favre said. "Thats what I am, thats how I look at myself and how I will be remembered: As a Packer." Zach Parise Jersey . Except this one came on the road. And it put the Saints on top of the so-so NFC South. Mark Ingram ran for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns and New Orleans defeated the Carolina Panthers 28-10 on Thursday night. The Saints broke a scoreless deadlock by scoring on three straight possessions in between the second and third quarters to build a 21-7 advantage and cruised the rest of the way en route to ending their seven-game, regular-season road losing streak. Following a career-high 172 rush yards Sunday, Ingram topped the 100-yard mark again after tallying just one 100-yard rushing performance prior in his first 40 games. It feels good, Ingram said. We just have to continue to prove it. We know that if we bring our A-game on the road and execute, limit the mistakes and turnovers, we can beat anybody. Drew Brees was 24-of-34 for 297 yards with a touchdown and an interception and added a rushing score for the Saints (4-4), who have bounced back from a 1-3 start by winning three of their last four contests. Jimmy Graham caught seven passes for 83 yards and a score, while Kenny Stills added five receptions for 72 yards in the triumph. Junior Galette recorded two of New Orleans four sacks and its defense held Cam Newton to just 151 yards passing with an interception on just 10-of-28 efficiency. Newton carried the ball seven times for 43 yards and a touchdown for Carolina (3-5-1), which accumulated just 231 total yards. The Panthers are 1-5-1 since a 2-0 start. We have to be professional about the situation and take responsibility and ownership and hold ourselves accountable, Newton said. The first of the Saints three straight scores came at the 2:38 mark of the second quarter. Newton initially eluded some Saints pressure by moving to his right, but didnt see a converging Galette from behind as he strip-sacked him at the Carolina 4. New Orleans linebacker Curtis Lofton recovered the loose ball and Ingram followed the pulling left guard Ben Grubbs off the right side for a 3-yard TD run two snaps later. The Saints defense then forced a three-and-out and briskly traveled 85 yards in 10 plays to put another touchdown on the board right before the half.dddddddddddd Brees hit Stills for a 17-yard completion on a 3rd-and-10 and Carolina cornerback Antoine Cason committed a pass interference on Robert Meachem in the end zone on a 3rd-and-17 from the Carolina 33. Brees then flipped a back-shoulder throw to Graham isolated in coverage in the back right corner of the end zone with three ticks to go in the half. Carolina picked up 70 yards of offense on its initial march of the third, nearly matching its first half total of 89. DeAngelo Williams took a screen pass for 30 yards on the opening play and Newton finished off the sequence with a 10-yard TD run. On the highlight-reel score, Newton spun to his left to escape from cornerback Patrick Robinsons blitz off the edge and ran away from Galette along the left sideline before diving inside the 5 and reaching the ball out inside the left pylon. The Saints answered with an elongated 6:10, 14-play, 80-yard series. Brees found Brandin Cooks for a 15-yard completion on an initial 3rd-and-9, hit Stills to pick up 12 on a 3rd-and-7 and snuck it in on fourth down to complete the drive late in the third. Graham Gano nailed a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth to get Carolina within 21-10, but the Saints drained the ensuing 7:27 off the clock prior to Ingram darting through for the back-breaking 3-yard score with 5:30 left. New Orleans turned the ball over on its first two touches, each while in Carolina territory. Panthers defensive tackle Dwan Edwards hauled in a deflected pass while the Saints were driving inside the red zone on their first sequence, and Mario Addison recovered a Brees fumble following Charles Johnsons strip-sack on their second. Carolina, though, couldnt capitalize despite driving into Saints territory on each of its first three series. Saints cornerback Corey White picked off Newton to end the Panthers third drive after Brenton Bersin dropped a pass over the middle early in the second. Game Notes Ingram became the first Saints back to run for over 100 yards in consecutive games since Deuce McAllister from Dec. 3-10 of the 2006 season ... New Orleans began the season 0-4 away from home ... The Saints had 375 total yards ... New Orleans was 7-of-13 on third down, while the Panthers finished 6-of-14. Hes got as good an arm as anybody. When hes on, when hes healthy, hes been a good big league pitcher. If he can fill that void, bounce back and have a full season out there where he doesnt go on the DL and you get his 30-plus starts, that will be big for us." Travis Snider had a first-inning RBI single and a two-run homer in the third off Morrow. Snider spent time on the disabled list last season with a left big toe injury. "Travis worked extremely hard this winter," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Hes moving so much better. Now thats he healthy and physically ready to go, well see where he can take us." Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run double for the Blue Jays. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Mark Buehrle will go against Pitttsburghs Gerrit Cole when the two teams play again Thursday in Bradenton.dddddddddddd Pirates: Jeff Locke was scratched from his start because of right side tightness. The Pirates believe the injury is a minor one. Locke gave up one hit in two scoreless innings last Thursday against the New York Yankees. The left-hander won eight straight starts in the first half of last season and made the NL All-Star team. But, he went 2-5 with a 6.12 ERA over his final 12 starts and was shut down in September. Jay Jackson, who filled in for Locke, gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. The 26-year old right-hander, signed to a minor league contract in December, pitched at Double-A and Triple-A for Miami last year. Pittsburgh starters have not allowed an earned run in five consecutive games, a span of 10 innings. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Closer Casey Janssen, out with a sore right shoulder, played catch for the second straight day. Outfielder Colby Rasmus sat out his fourth consecutive game due to a stiff neck. REASSIGNMENTS The Blue Jays sent right-hander Tomo Ohka, left-hander Juan Perez, and catchers Derrick Chung and Jack Murphy to their minor league camp this week. Ohka, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2009, agreed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in December. The 37-year-old was 51-68 for Boston (1999-01), Montreal (2001-04), Washington (2005), Milwaukee (2005-06), Toronto (2007) and Cleveland (2009). He has played in Japan for Yokohama (1995-98 and 2010-11) and Toyama (2013).
